Project Case Study
Co-operating with a nearby piggery, 40,000 households in Hunan province have been equipped to utilise the biogas generated by the decomposition of manure produced by around 200,000 pigs. This gas is used by the local community for cooking and thermal heating, displacing traditional fuels such as coal and wood.
In addition to reducing emissions by over 105,000t CO2-e annually, the project has also delivered a number of additional environmental and social benefits:
- Negating the need to use coal and wood for heating and cooking has increased air quality inside and outside homes, reducing the incidence of eye and respiratory afflictions
- 600 new construction and maintenance jobs have been created in rural areas as a result of the project
- The environmental damage caused by the dumping of untreated, nutrient-rich waste from the piggery is avoided by its use in the project. Instead, solid waste from the biogas digesters can be sold as organic fertiliser after biogas is extracted.
This is just one example of Originate Carbon’s commitment to practical and innovative solutions – binding environmental sense with social assistance by working with local people to improve their day-to-day life, whilst benefitting the greater global picture.
